There are many elements that are involved with mosquito control, and at the heart of it all, is quality products. With the health risks mosquitoes pose, it is essential that consumers have quality control products that are safe and effective. There are many methods that are efficient, and with the help of Snell Scientifics testing your products, you can help consumers combat these pests. Today, we at Snell Scientifics would like to take a look at various mosquito products and briefly discuss how we can test and help you maximize the safety and efficiency of your mosquito control products.

Do Mosquito Traps Work?

20th century control measures included insect electrocutors (bug zappers) and mosquito trapping devices. To improve their appeal to the public, manufacturers modernized 19th century mosquito trapping devices. For the past several years claiming they can provide relief from biting mosquitoes and other pests in your back yard, insect electrocutor light traps have been extensively marketed. There are quite a few devices available for purchase that claim to repel, attract, or kill outdoor infestations of mosquitoes. By emitting a plume of carbon dioxide, moisture, and heat, other mosquito traps are designed to mimic a potential mammalian host such as man, horse, cattle, and domestic pets. To create an attractant to mosquitoes, no-see-ums, biting midges and black flies the, these illusions draw in the pest. A vacuum device sucks the insects into a net or cylinder where they dehydrate and die after drawing the insects to the trap. These traps usually lack electric killing grid or pesticides. Scientific data relative to the effectiveness of these devices is sparse to find, but with Snell Scientifics, you receive all the associated data with a clear and concise analysis of your products.

Are Mosquito Sprays Effective?

By using a flit gun, mosquitoes used to be killed inside the house. Available now are household aerosol space sprays containing synergized pyrethrum or synthetic pyrethroids. Immediate knockdown, quick application, and relatively small amounts of materials are required for treatment which is the major advantage of space treatment. Most space sprays and only effective indoors as the insecticide particles disperse rapidly and may not kill many mosquitoes outdoors. Unfortunately, it will not manage insects for long periods of time which is the major disadvantage of space spraying. If doors and windows are kept closed during spraying and for 5-10 minutes after spraying is how the best results are obtained.

Does Outdoor Mosquito Fogger Keeps Mosquitoes Away?

For temporary relief from flying mosquitoes, homeowners, ranchers or businesses may use hand-held ULV foggers, portable or fogging attachments for tractors or lawn mowers. Pyrethrins or 5% malathion can be fogged outdoors. Both the insecticide label and fogging attachments for application procedure have specific steps that need to be followed.

What Material Can Mosquitoes Not Bite Through?

By keeping windows, doors and porches tightly screened, usually of 16-18 mesh, mosquitoes can be kept out of the home. With a fly swatter or an aerosol space spray containing synergized pyrethrum, those insects that do get into structures can be eliminated.

Mosquito Control Product Testing

At the American Mosquito Control Association’s national conference, Snell Scientifics presented our method for field testing mosquito traps. Our method is cost effective and highly sensitive, and in order to find a series of balanced points on which to mount traps, we spent the time and effort to test hundreds of locations. We have many testing strategies to collect the data you for your mosquito control product. Call us to learn more today.
